Pallet rack beam spacing, from pallet to roof
This is the planning arithmetic behind a rack elevation: how far apart beam levels sit, how many of them fit under your clear height, and how many pallets each bay holds. It is a worksheet, not a submittal — final elevations, beam capacities and clearances still come from the manufacturer’s current chart and a licensed engineer of record.
What sets the pitch between beam levels
“Pitch” is the vertical distance from the top of one beam to the top of the beam above it, and FloorCast3D builds it from three numbers stacked on top of each other. Start with the load’s own height — the pallet plus whatever is stacked on it. Add 6″ of lift-off clearance: the forks have to raise the load clear of the beam it is resting on before they can back out with it, so that gap has to exist above every load, not just the top one. Add 4″ for the beam’s own face — the steel FloorCast3D assumes for planning when no specific beam has been picked yet; a taller step beam pushes the next level up by however much taller it is. For the app’s standard 48″ load, a pallet plus its goods, those three numbers add up to 58″ — top of one beam to the top of the next.
The floor is a level too
The bottom load in any bay sits directly on the slab — there is no beam under it. That makes the floor the first load level, and it is the one place in the stack that costs no steel. A rack that is N pallet loads high therefore needs only N minus 1 beam levels, not N. It is an easy place to overcount by one: count load levels, subtract the floor, and what is left is how many beam levels to order.
How many levels fit under your roof
Levels are bounded from the top down, not built up from the floor. FloorCast3D checks the top of the highest load — not the top beam — against the building’s clear height, holding back a reserve. The tool’s planning default for that reserve is 36″, set as a conservative placeholder: the figure your project actually gets to use comes from the building’s own sprinkler design and the sign-off of the fire-protection engineer of record, not from this page.

Pallets per bay
Beam length spans the bay opening a manufacturer’s chart supports — see the part numbers guide for how those charts and their connectors are built. How many pallets that opening actually holds is a separate, smaller calculation: each load needs 3″ of clear space on both sides so the forks have room to place and pick it, so a 40″ GMA pallet in a 96″ clear opening stores 2. A load wider than the opening is not silently narrowed to fit it — it stores nothing; a 100″ load in that same 96″ opening returns 0, forcing a wider bay rather than an optimistic count. What the forks must reach
Top of load — not the clear height, and not the top beam — is the number a truck’s fork height is judged against. FloorCast3D checks every position’s height against the maximum fork height entered for the truck working that zone, and it warns on the positions that sit above it rather than pretending they are usable.
