Forklift aisle widths for pallet rack, by truck class
The aisle a racking plan needs depends on which forklift runs it – a counterbalance truck and a turret truck can differ by five or six feet on the same building. The figures below are planning defaults, the loosest tier of evidence a layout can use. The truck manufacturer’s own data sheet is what actually governs a real aisle, and it should replace every number on this page the moment you know which truck is running the building.
The four truck classes, and their class-typical aisle
These are class-typical CLEAR aisle figures – the space between loads with nothing else counted. The better formula: right-angle stack + load length + clearance
A class table only stands in for the number a real truck actually needs. That number is right-angle stack (RAS) – the narrowest aisle the truck can turn a load into a rack opening in one motion – plus the load’s own length, plus a fixed 12″ operating clearance. RAS comes off the truck’s spec plate for its exact mast and load combination; it is not something a class table or a website can look up for you.
Worked example: a spec plate reading 90″ RAS, carrying the app’s own 48″ standard pallet depth as the load length, needs a computed aisle of 90 + 48 + 12 = 150″. Change the RAS reading and every other term holds – that is the whole formula.
Clear aisle and steel-to-steel aisle are not the same number
Every figure above is a CLEAR aisle – load face to load face, with the steel itself not counted. But a pallet is usually deeper than the rack frame it sits on: the app’s default 48″ pallet on its default 42″ frame – the same frame depth this site’s rack manufacturers guide decodes out of a real part number – overhangs each face by 3″.
That overhang comes off both rows facing the aisle, so the STEEL gap – upright to upright, the dimension that actually gets drawn and permitted – has to be wider than the clear aisle by both overhangs combined: 3 + 3 = 6″ added to every clear figure on this page. Skip that step and a “144-inch aisle” on the drawing quietly becomes 138 inches of real clear space once the pallets hang into it – a narrow-aisle racking dimension that looks fine on paper and binds in the building. What a narrower aisle buys
One honest worked example: the same 300′ × 200′ building at 32′ clear height, packed with single-deep back-to-back selective rack, run once per truck class. Only the aisle changes between rows – everything else about the building holds.

Trading the counterbalance aisle for a narrow-aisle reach truck adds 1,272 positions to this same footprint – 16.8% more storage from aisle width alone. A turret / VNA aisle adds 2,928 positions, 38.7% more, before any other change to the building.
Read that as an upper bound, not a forecast. But it is still a class average, not a spec: mast height, tire type and load length all shift a given truck’s real right-angle stack, so confirm 144″ against the OEM’s data sheet before it goes on a permit set.
What is a right-angle stacking aisle?
Right-angle stack (RAS) is the narrowest aisle a specific truck can turn 90° into a rack opening and set a load down in one motion, without a reversing maneuver. It comes off the truck manufacturer’s spec plate for the exact model, mast and load combination — not from a class table like the one above.
Does pallet size change the required aisle?
It changes two different numbers. A longer load adds directly to the RAS formula’s load-length term, widening the required aisle. Separately, a pallet deeper than the rack frame overhangs the steel on both faces, which is why the clear aisle a truck needs and the steel-to-steel gap between two rows of rack are not the same measurement.
How narrow can a VNA aisle go?
Turret and very-narrow-aisle (VNA) trucks run the tightest aisles of any class, generally guided by a wire-in-floor or rail system so the truck cannot drift off center in a gap that tight. The exact minimum is a function of the specific truck, mast and guidance system — treat it as an OEM engineering conversation, not a table lookup.
